Toenail Fungus
Toenail fungus, also called tinea of the nails and onychomycosis (on-ee-ko-me-KO-sis) is caused by a family of fungus called dermatophytes. There are different kinds of fungi in this family, but if you have toenail fungus (or fingernail fungus), chances are you have one kind of fungus from this family growing in your nail.
Toenail fungus can be extremely uncomfortable and embarrassing, since it causes your toenails to thicken and discolor, making for unsightly and tender nails. To learn more about the causes and symptoms of toenail fungus, and to find out if you're at a high risk of onychomycosis, check out the What Is Toenail Fungus? page.
