Knowing the facts and statistics on nail fungus won't make it go away, but it might make you feel like you're in good company.  Nail fungus is an incredibly pervasive problem around the world and one that many people have experienced.  The statistics are actually shocking.  While you may think that you're battling this problem alone and that you doctor isn't going to know how to help you, you should feel a little better knowing how many people share your problem.

The Numbers

Toe nail fungus has been found to affect 2-18% of the worldwide population.  Some research has shown that this number translates to 35 million people worldwide who have experienced fungal infections.  It usually affects adults and the chances of getting it increase as you age.  25% of adults will experience some type of nail fungus by the time that they are 40 years old.  For senior citizens, the fungus statistics is even higher with 50% of seniors having some type of toe nail fungus.

Toe nail fungus is much more common than hand nail fungus, because fungi like to live in dark, warm places - and your feet give it that opportunity.  One dermatology study in the U.S. found that almost 50% of the people who came into a doctor's clinic were coming for fungus related problems. The high rate of toe nail fungus should actually reassure anyone suffering from this problem.  While nail fungus is often unsightly and can be painful, it is very common and highly treatable.

Statistics on Who Gets Toe Nail Fungus

Statistics show that the people who are most prone to nail fungus are the elderly, those with diabetes and circulation problems and others such as athletes who tend to sweat a lot around their feet and walk barefoot in potentially infectious locker rooms.  Researchers have found that, while certain people are more prone to fungal infections, certain activities also create these infections.  If you frequently walk barefoot in wet places or wear heavy work boots for long durations (this makes your feet sweaty), then you're more prone to infections.  If you work somewhere where your hands are often wet, such as a dishwasher in a restaurant or as a housecleaner, then you're also more prone to these infections.

If you are in one of the high risk groups for toe nail fungus, then it's important to pay attention to the preventative methods that you can use to avoid nail fungus.  While people of a certain age are more prone to this problem, and people with certain immunity issues are more at risk, there are certainly ways that you can work to prevent this problem.  Similarly, if your lifestyle keeps you in sweaty shoes, keeps you barefoot in wet places, or keeps you in contact with others who have infections, there are also important preventative steps that you can take to avoid fungal infections.

Once you do have an infection, know that you are not alone.  This is a highly common problem in America, and around the world, and one that can be treated in many different ways. Treatment methods for nail fungus include over the counter remedies, prescription medicines and natural methods.  All have their advantages and disadvantages.
